This Week's Sales In Hip Hop

Regaining hip-hop's position at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 charts this week is T.I.'s Paper Trail, which has officially been certified gold selling over 568,300 copies after only seven days in stores.

According to the Nielsen Soundscan, Tip may indeed be the "King of the South" as his latest effort marks the third consecutive time he's received the No. 1 debut and the second time since 2006's King that he's gone gold within a week's time span. The Grammy-winning rapper's long-awaited sixth album offers fans a steady mix of mega superstars including Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and more, along with production by DJ Toomp, Swizz Beatz and Kanye West who created the star-studded hit "Swagger Like Us."

Surprising fans and critics alike is Academy Award winning singer Jennifer Hudson with her self-titled debut landing at No. 2 selling over 217,200 copies. The former "American Idol" star has gardened a solid fan base of music and movie lovers as she has been in major films like Dream Girls and Sex and the City. Showing off her vocal skills on the hit "Spotlight," the Chi-town native brought along a few mainstream influences including Ludacris and T-Pain plus mega producers Ne-Yo, StarGate, Timbaland, Robin Thicke, and others to launch a stellar release.

Making his highly anticipated return to the charts is Robin Thicke who opened up at No. 3 with Something Else moving over 136,900 copies in its first week on shelves. The blue-eyed soul singer follows-up his platinum-selling The Evolution of Robin Thicke.

Also making a solid debut is West Coast's Murs with his first major label release Murs for President landing at No. 43 pushing over 12,200 records in his first week in stores. The album features production by 9th Wonder, will.i.am and Nottz along with cameos from fellow West Coast rapper Snoop Dogg and Tyler Woods.

Other notable debuts making it within Billboard's 200 is Grand Hustle's Big Kuntry King with My Turn To Eat securing No. 95 with over 6,000 albums sold, Dem Franchize Boyz' Our World Our Way grabbing No. 115 and Heltah Skeltah's D.I.R.T. at 119 both selling just over 5,200 copies.

Hip-Hop Preserved At Cornell University

Hip-Hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa will help preserve the genre's origins by joining in festivities and celebrating the "Born in the Bronx: The Legacy and Evolution of Hip Hop" collection at Cornell University later this month.

The free two-day conference will showcase documents from the early days of hip-hop including recordings, photographs, posters and more. Famous for being one of the first hip-hop deejays to help mold the art form in the South Bronx during the 70's, Bambaataa will also be speaking on the culture's importance.

"By paying tribute to those who laid the foundation, we tell our own history," he said in a statement. "Preserving hip-hop's early years will help future generations understand the places they come from."

Joined by a number of hip-hop historians and pioneers including Grandmaster Caz, Grand Wizard Theodore, Pop Master Fable, Tony Tone, Disco Wiz and Kool Lady Blue, the event will also look to further enhance outsiders' views of the genre's realm.

"We want the community at large to celebrate hip-hop's contributions to American culture," Cornell curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts Katherine Reagan said in a statement. "Through a better understanding of its origins, which are the focus of this unique collection."

Donated by hip-hop collector Johan Kugelberg, the "Born in the Bronx" collection illustrates the birth of the culture from its' early 70's uprising with a 2,000 piece showing.

The event begins Friday, October 31st and runs through Saturday, November 1st at Cornell University.

NBA 2K9 Hits Stores Today

The Live vs. 2K debate is getting heated this year—EA’s NBA Live 09 and 2K’s NBA 2K9 hit stores this week, and both look pretty tough. For true b-ball gamers, the 2K series has been on top for a minute, but EA is stepping it up this year (minus its choice of Mr. Eva Longoria as 09’s cover athlete). So, which one deserves your $60?

Well, EA starting pitching us months ago on 09’s Dynamic DNA and NBA 365 online features, which updates gameplay as the actual NBA season progresses. We thought that was pretty innovative, until we learned that 2K9’s Living Rosters basically do the same thing. What it comes down to, as always, is gameplay.

Here, 2K9 still wins. We showed you a bit of the first 2K9 trailer, but the newest clip seals the deal. It shows amazingly fluid and lifelike in-game animations, including an entire section devoted to Allen Iverson getting fouled. Awesome.

Oh yeah, and we’ve played 2K9. It’s as good as it looks. See the trailer below…

T.I Responds To Jim Jones "Swagger Like Us" Comments!

Jim Jones Explains His ‘Swagger Like Us’ Response

Everyone seems to have an opinion on “Swagger Like Us,” T.I.’s recent all-star collabo with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Kanye West. Folks like Jermaine Dupri and Diddy have even recorded their own verses over the song in an attempt to assert their own “swag” status.

Now Jim Jones is taking it one step further. Last week, we were building with the Capo in his studio for some future shit (stay tuned) when he spilled the beans about his own response to the song, a rumor that Miss Info reported on yesterday. He’s currently recording a new joint named “Jackin’ Swagger From Us,” featuring additional verses from Juelz and Lil Wayne, along with a re-recorded hook from M.I.A. and a new beat by Chink Santana. Read on to preview an exclusive snippet of the track and see what Jones had to say about the four artists on the first “Swagger”…

Complex: You and Juelz are all about that swag-splashing. How do you feel about not being included on “Swagger Like Us”?

Jim Jones: I think it was deliberate. I really do think it was deliberate; maybe in my sick twisted mind I’m a little crazy. People know who set the precedent as far as fashion in this industry and people know who damn near changed the world as far as fashion. You look at people, they went from the urban world of clothing, back when Rocawear and Sean John was cool. And then in the past 5 years I stepped in and gave them a taste of what rock and roll looks like from my side. I guess people would say from an urban side, and it seemed to catch on like wildfire, to the point that people was going to stores and asking for that Jim Jones look. Me and Juelz had Chink do our own beat, I have Weezy’s verse in my inbox right now and we kept the hook of that song because it was a sample. So we’re going to put that as a bonus track on the album, and put it to the streets. “No one on the corner got swag like you we don’t Rocawear that’s for fags like you.” [Laughs.]

Complex: Ahhh…

Jim Jones: And look at the Vibe cover. Tell me who Jay-Z looks like in there? Did you see the picture of him? With the Louis Vuitton scarf and all that. Who did that resemble? You can say it. But he did it wrong; he had a Gucci belt with a Louis Vuitton scarf. Who does that? You smell me? That’s like wearing one Nike and one Puma; how you going to get away with that? But I didn’t take the song as a shot, because I don’t feel like none [besides Weezy] of them possess any swag.

Complex: What about T.I?

Jim Jones: I don’t feel like he possesses any swag. Not like that. It’s fabricated. They’re watching other people, then they try and do it. You know people that dress like T.I.? You know people that go out and say let me get a T.I. outfit or do you know people who say “yo, you’re looking like Jim Jones?” Which one? Lemme hear it! When the bitches want to fuck you and the niggas want be like you, who got the swag? Niggas with money and fame always going to look like they doing something ’cause they got the camera in front of them. But the cool dudes always stick out no matter where they at.

"All Eyez On Me" Producer Commits Suicide

Legendary producer, Johnny J, has committed suicide:

Producer Johnny J, most popular for his extensive work on Tupac’s All Eyez On Me album, died while in custody at the Los Angeles County jail on Friday (October 3). His death is being considered a suicide. Johnny J (real name: Johnny Jackson) was in jail for a DUI charge. Authorities say he took his own life by jumping off a tier in the jail. He was just 39 years old, and leaves a wife and two children. In early 90s, the Mexican-born, Los Angeles-raised producer first gained notoriety after producing the hit single “Knockin’ Boots” for his Berklee College of Music classmate Candyman. Following the success of the single, he met Tupac and worked with the legendary rapper on his Thug Life album, the Above The Rim soundtrack, and the rest of the late rapper’s projects up until his death.

Lil Wayne Adds Blogger To Resume

Lil Wayne is now blogging for ESPN, here’s a snippet:

Hello, everybody. This is the first entry in the blog I’m doing for ESPN The Magazine. I don’t watch nothing but sports—no movies, no news, no television shows—so I thought this would be fun. I grew up playing football. Believe it or not, I was a fullback. When I was nine, ten, eleven, I was a great blocker. I knew how to block real good and the other kids didn’t. So there I was. One game when I was ten years old we were on the goal line about to score, and coach called the play for me. I was supposed to go one way, but I ended up sneaking around the other side on a sweep. Everybody thought I was already tackled. The ref was already blowin’ his whistle. But I was still up and I stutter stepped one way and beat the last guy trying to get me and scored that touchdown. That’s my favorite sports memory for myself.

This Week's Sales In Hip Hop

It’s over for the Boy Nelly…Good thing Khaled is on the Independent route…I know Def Jam is very dissapointed with his 1st weeks numbers…Ne-Yo did what was expected of him though and Jeezy & Wayne are still rolling…The Recession will cap off at around the same amount Ross has caped off at…Oh well that how the game goes!!!!!

The Top 5 moved around in the last seven days. In their 25th year, Metallica assumed the top spot, with their Death Magnetic, selling over 335,000 units in its second work on the charts. The new release from Ne-Yo [click to read], Year of the Gentleman [click to read] held the door for the 40-something rockers, as Def Jam's R&B sensation sold a sliver over 250,000 units in its first week. Completing the Top 3, Nelly [click to read] restored a top position on the charts, as his long-delayed Brass Knuckles [click to read] was significantly behind Ne-Yo, but at #3 nonetheless, with over 83,000 units sold.

With the top-heavy movement, Young Jeezy [click to read] and his Recession [click to read] took the #6 spot, scanning just under 60,000 units after having a stronghold in the Top 5. Jeezy may return there next week. Koch Records gets their first Hip Hop act back into the Top 10 in some time with Miami deejay and calling-card to the stars DJ Khaled [click to read]. The Terror Squad member's third album may climb higher, after an impressive start, just under 50,000 sold in We Global's first week.

What would a Top 10 in 2008 be without Lil Wayne [click to read]? Tha Carter III [click to read] sold just above 43,000 units, keeping it in the Top 10, as a hard-to-move reminder of rap's best-selling release of 2008. Not included after just one week there, LL Cool J fell to #32, selling less than 15,000 copies of his Def Jam parting shot.

Obama-Biden Campaign Soundtrack

Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement features Kanye West, John Legend, Jill Scott and Lionel Richie, among others. Proceeds from the CD ($24.99 for a digital download, $30 for a physical product) will help fund Obama’s campaign until Nov. 4, Election Day, according to Hidden Beach Recordings, which created the CD.

School Suspends Student Over T-Shirt

Daxx Dalton, an 11-year-old fifth grader at Aurora Frontier School in Colorado, says his first amendment rights are being violated after he was suspended for wearing a homemade t-shirt that readers “Obama is a terrorist’s best friend”.

The boy’s father, Dann, says the school made a major mistake by suspending his son for wearing the shirt: “It’s the public school system. Let’s be honest, it’s full of liberal loons.”

The school told Daxx that he had the choice of either changing his shirt, turning it inside out or being suspended. He chose suspension.

He said, “They’re taking away my right of freedom of speech. If I have the right to wear this shirt I’m going to use it. And if the only way to use it is get suspended, then I’m going to get suspended.” Paperwork from the school says he wasn’t suspended for wearing the shirt, but for willful disobedience and defiance.

The boy’s father says he intends to pursue a lawsuit against the district.

Sex In All 50 States....Eva Mendes Has!!!!

Eva Mendes has confessed to having sex in every state in the US, according to English tabloid "The Sun" ... but not with 50 different men.

“I've had sex in all 50 states. A lot of it was on a road trip I took when I was younger," the actress, who is currently appearing in "The Women," reportedly said.

Of all 50 states, Mendes' fondest memories are of Arizona and Colorado.

“Maybe it was the clear air, or the quiet, or the endless sky. Whatever it was, it was really, really good," she reportedly said.

“But as for Alaska — I’d really like a do-over on that state, she added, according to the Sun. See more reasons to catch up with her in Alaska below:

Spin Off For Girls Next Door

So if you're a fan of the Girls Next Door like I am then here is something worth watching....Hugh Hefner’s Girls Next Door playmates could have their own spinoff. That’s not the kicker, Kendra Wilkinson is leaving the playboy mansion and wants her own show, but Holly and Bridget might get one too. Nothing is confirmed and I’m sure it will premiere on E! if this is true. For now, Hugh, Holly and Bridget are gearing up for their third season premiere October 5th. Would you watch a spinoff of all three of the girls individually?

Not of Holly and Bridget but I would of Kendra...that's the homie right there!!!

Remembering 9/11

The nation paused today to mark the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with heartfelt remembrances at the World Trade Center site, the dedication of a memorial at the Pentagon and a planned visit to ground zero by the presidential candidates.

Relatives of victims killed at the World Trade Center gathered in a park in lower Manhattan for readings from dignitaries and a recitation of the names of the dead. Later Thursday, Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain were due at ground zero to pay silent respects.

"Today marks the seventh anniversary of the day our world was broken," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at the start of the ceremony, calling Sept. 11, 2001, a "day that began like any other and ended as none ever has."

Kanye's Love May Be Locked Down.....But So Is He!!!

Kanye West has just been arrested at LAX for felony vandalism.

A still photographer was trying to take pics of Kanye at the American Airlines terminal. According to our guy on the scene, Kanye allegedly confronted the photog and smashed his camera to the ground.

Our photog then began videotaping the scene when Kanye’s assistant grabbed our camera — a struggle ensued and the assistant threw the video camera to the ground, breaking it.

When Kanye realized our camera guy had videotaped the incident, he rushed our guy and yelled, “Gimme that f**king tape!”

Both Kanye and his assistant have been arrested and will be booked.

Kanye West New Album Title & Release Date Confirmed

Kanye West is in the studio as he prepares to drop another album later this year.
The word across the blogs is that Kanye West's fourth solo album entitled 808's & Heartbreak will be released on December 16.

The BET.com blog, Sound Off, is also reporting that Kanye will be utilizing the Auto-Tuner, (an audio processor created by Antares Audio Technologies which uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances) throughout much of the album.

This is the same device used on his verse for Young Jeezy's "Put On" and most recently, "Love LockDown," the new single which the rapper premiered this past Sunday on the MTV Video Music Awards.

Blender Magazine Controversy

What's the deal with these magazines?

Deceased Hip Hop icon Tupac Shakur has been named the most overrated person in music by music magazine Blender.

Pac landed at the top of a list which includes "places, trends and other junk in rock," said Blender in its upcoming October issue, which hits newsstands next week.
Tupac gained a cult-like following after his unsolved, premature death at the hands of a shooter in Las Vegas in 1996.

Since then, he's released more than a dozen albums. Adding to his mythical status, many conspiracy theories surrounding the death of the rapper arose, some asserting that Tupac is still, in fact, alive.

According to Blender, Tupac was a decent rapper with "insane rock-star charisma.

Tupac was known for controversy, so this statement doesn't suprise me!!!
What do you think????

Vibe also catches some flack after R&B singer let out that Vibe told him that they didn't feature White artist on their cover. So they would rather put a naked African American female on the cover than a Caucasian on the cover.....

What do you think on this one???

50 Cent Tops Forbes' Hip-Hop Cash Kings 2008 List

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After last year's crown went to Jay-Z, resulting in the 50 Cent "I Get Money" (1-2-3 Remix) with Diddy on board, 50 Cent can claim himself this year as Forbes' estimated top earner in Hip Hop.

The leading financial institution estimated that 50 made $150 million over the last year, topped by his Vitamin Water deal with Coca Cola. Jay-Z fell $18 million behind Fif at $82 million, including his blockbuster Live Nation deal. Diddy rounded out the last at Number Three, coming in at $35 million, a departure from the close running of the three New York rap moguls the last two years.

Common, Lil Wayne and Akon made first time showings on the list, replacing Scott Storch, Yung Joc and Ice Cube [click to read].

One thing I've realized in life is that you can have all of these things, but none of them can compare to S.U.C.C.E.S.S. or to succeed, knowing that you've accomplished your goals you set out to accomplish, and also the fact that you've helped so many people along the way.

The Issue At Hand

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

When did Hip Hop become more inferior than politics?
Let’s take Plies & Rick Ross for example…
They make good music, correct?
What does being “Street” or “Hood” really have to do with making good music?

Take Lil Wayne for example, he touches on the same issues as these two artists; he just does it in a more creative way. Is anyone judging his credibility?

Are the background checks really necessary?

Here it is, you have two black men that are relevant in the game: who are providing for their families and as well as other families, and creating job opportunities, also setting positive examples for today’s youth. Showing them you can come from nothing and make it into something.

So, S. Fresh signs off by saying “Who Cares”
Make the music that is real to you!!!!!
